Ha Long Bay Vietnam Travel Guide
Nothing quite prepares you for the first sight of Ha Long Bay: nearly two thousand limestone towers rising out of jade-green water in the Gulf of Tonkin. We'd seen the photos for years, yet standing on deck as the karsts closed in around the boat still felt unreal. This UNESCO World Heritage site is really one big decision, which cruise to take, and a handful of smaller ones we'll walk you through here, with real 2026 prices.

Top things to do in Ha Long Bay
The cruise is the main event, and almost everything else is bundled into it. A good day cruise starts around ₫1,400,000, roughly $55-120 depending on the boat, and includes lunch, a cave visit, and usually kayaking. The bay's sightseeing fee of ₫290,000-310,000 (about $12) is normally folded into the price, but confirm before booking. Overnight boats run $100-250+ per person and reach quieter corners of the bay the day-trippers never see ~ waking up anchored among the karsts is the memory that lasts.
Sung Sot Cave, the 'Surprise Cave', is the bay's biggest grotto: two vast chambers of dramatically lit stalactites, reached by a climb of about 100 steps. Nearly every standard-route cruise stops here. Ti Top Island is the other classic stop ~ around 400 steps up to a pagoda viewpoint that delivers THE postcard panorama of the karsts, with a small crescent beach below for a swim afterwards.
Kayaking is the moment we'd never skip. Paddling through low rock arches into hidden lagoons, where the cliffs close in and the engine noise disappears, was the highlight of our trip. It costs ₫100,000-200,000 (about $4-8) when charged separately, though mid-range boats and up usually include it. If you have a spare evening on land, the Sun World cable car (about ₫350,000, roughly $14) swings a record-breaking two-deck cabin over the bay to a hilltop Ferris wheel.
Choosing your cruise: day trip vs overnight
Day cruises suit tight itineraries: leave Hanoi around 8 am, cruise from roughly noon to 4 pm, and be back in the city by 8:30 pm. It's a long day for about four hours on the water, which is why we lean hard toward overnighting. One night on the bay means sunset and sunrise among the karsts, tai chi on deck, squid fishing off the stern, and routes that push past the day-boat traffic.
Boats range from simple wooden junks at around $100 per person per night to genuinely luxurious steel ships with balconies, bathtubs, and pools at $200-250+. Mid-range boats around $130-180 hit the sweet spot in our experience: good cabins, kayaking included, decent seafood dinners. Book a week or more ahead for weekends and October-November, and check whether your price includes the Hanoi transfer ~ most do, some charge $15-25 extra for limousine vans.
The quieter alternative: Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island
Here's the tip we share most often: Lan Ha Bay, immediately south of Ha Long proper, has the same jaw-dropping karst scenery with a fraction of the boats. It's technically part of the Cat Ba archipelago, and cruises departing this way often feel newer and less crowded. Many of the best overnight boats now sail Lan Ha routes ~ if yours does, consider it a feature, not a compromise.
Budget travelers can skip the packaged cruise entirely and base on Cat Ba Island, where ferries and local boat tours combined run $25-60. Cat Ba town has cheap guesthouses from $10-15, motorbike rental for exploring the national park, and day boats out to swimming lagoons and the floating fishing villages. It's the backpacker route to essentially the same views, and we met travelers who preferred it outright.
Getting there and where to stay
Almost everyone comes via Hanoi. From Noi Bai airport or the Old Quarter, it's about 2.5 hours to Tuan Chau or Ha Long port by shuttle or limousine bus, and most cruises include the pickup ~ typically an 8-9 am hotel collection. Public 'limousine' vans cost $10-15 each way if you're traveling independently. There's no need to rent a car; the expressway transfer is painless.
Most visitors treat Ha Long as a one- or two-night side trip from Hanoi and sleep on the boat, which we think is exactly right. If you want a land base, Bai Chay on the mainland has hotels from $20-40 with the Sun World park nearby, while Cat Ba town serves the Lan Ha side. Leave your big luggage at your Hanoi hotel ~ nearly all of them store it free while you carry an overnight bag aboard.
Best time to visit Ha Long Bay and practical tips
The best windows are March to May and September to November, when skies are clearer and seas calmer. Summer (June-August) is hot and busy with domestic tourism, and typhoons can cancel sailings at short notice between July and September ~ cruises refund or reschedule, but build a buffer day into your plans. Winter (December-February) brings atmospheric mist and cool 15-20°C days; the karsts look mystical, just pack layers.
Practical notes: bring a light jacket for evening breezes on deck, sunscreen, and motion-sickness tablets if you're sensitive, though the bay is generally calm. Book with licensed operators and read recent reviews ~ the gap between a great boat and a tired one is huge at similar prices. Wi-Fi on board is patchy; download entertainment and let the bay do the rest.
How much does a Ha Long Bay trip cost?
For a good day cruise from Hanoi, budget $55-120 all-in: transfer, lunch, cave entry, kayaking, and the roughly $12 sightseeing fee are typically bundled. Overnight cruises run $100-250+ per person depending on the boat class, again mostly all-inclusive except drinks, which are charged at resort-style prices on board ~ a beer is usually $2-4.
The Cat Ba/Lan Ha budget route brings a two-day visit down to roughly $40-80 total with ferries, a guesthouse, and a local day boat. Add your Hanoi costs around it: Vietnam overall is excellent value, with street food at $1-3 a meal and mid-range Hanoi hotels at $30-60. All told, a one-night cruise splurge inside a Vietnam trip costs less than a single theme-park day in most countries, and delivers far more.
