How many days do you need in Georgia?

For a first taste we recommend 4 to 5 days: two in Tbilisi for the old town, Narikala, and the sulfur baths, one for the Kazbegi mountains via the Georgian Military Highway, and one for Mtskheta, the ancient capital, plus a proper wine tasting. It's a small country that packs in an absurd amount.

Can you do Kazbegi as a day trip from Tbilisi?

Yes, it's about 3 hours each way along the spectacular Georgian Military Highway, and services like GoTrip.ge give you a fixed-price private car that stops wherever you like. At the top, a 4x4 taxi to Gergeti Trinity Church costs around 20 to 30 GEL, and the church itself is free.

Is Georgia cheap to travel?

Very. We budget $45 to $190 a day all-in: beds from $15 at places like Fabrika Hostel, food $15 to $30, transport $5 to $15, and activities $10 to $25. A khachapuri feast costs a few dollars, and many of the best sights, like the Chronicle of Georgia, are free.

When is the best time to visit Georgia?

May to June brings wildflowers to the mountains, while September to October is the rtveli wine harvest, when the country's 8,000-year-old winemaking tradition is at its liveliest. Both windows give you comfortable city weather in Tbilisi and clear views up in the Caucasus.

Citizens of 90-plus countries, including the US, EU, and GCC states, can currently stay visa-free for a full year, but check the current rules for your passport. Note that proof of health insurance is mandatory from 2026, so carry your policy documents when you enter.

Archaeologists have traced Georgian winemaking back about 8,000 years, the oldest evidence found anywhere, and much of it still ferments in buried clay qvevri. In Tbilisi we'd book a tasting at a wine bar like 8000 Vintages, and fair warning from the locals: wait for the Tamada's toast, and sip slowly, it's stronger than it tastes.
