Sabah's laid-back capital is the doorway to Borneo ~ coral islands ten minutes offshore and Southeast Asia's highest peak an hour inland. City sights are free; the boats and the mountain are where the ringgit goes.

This covers island-hopping boats and park fees ~ climbing Mount Kinabalu is a separate $250+ expedition with permits and a guide.
